Home security can range from security systems that are monitored by third party companies, dispatching emergency services if any trouble is detected, to simple smoke alarms. Home surveillance cameras add another level of protection by recording everything that occurs around your house, allowing you to catch any thieves that enter your home and letting others know that what they do in your house won't be kept secret.

Previously, they would have been recorded to videotape but newer digital video recorders (DVRs) record the data to hard disk drives with increased capacity, and they last longer without needing to be replaced as well, saving you money in the long run.
Home surveillance cameras have tons of uses already, and everyone who wants one could probably come up with a few new ones that suit their own needs. Of course, they might not appeal to everyone, but if you want to protect your home, then by all means go for it. Cost certainly isn't a huge issue anymore because they cost just a fraction of what they used to, and years of developments have made them much easier to install and run. Ultimately, home surveillance cameras should be chosen only on the matter of choice, rather than having cost or installation problems restrict you from having them.
